Christmas Road Trip... Part 1.

Kyle and I are not native Southern Californians..  Kyle is originally from Wisconsin and I am from Seattle.  For us the holidays involve a lot of travel.  Planes, and trains is normally how we get home for the holidays.. but this year we added automobiles..   We decided to take a different approach... "ROAD TRIP" and make it an adventure!

We started out and headed straight up to San Fransisco for our first stop.. arriving at our hotel, Hotel Vitale Chloe received the royal treatment, she got her own bed, bowl and bath towel, which made her quite the VIP doggie.   That night we ventured downtown and for some night photography and explored the city.

From San Fran. we stayed on the 101 freeway and took our time heading up through the Redwoods.. and, "WOW," what an amazing drive!! Such a phenomenon..  with the rain and all!! We came upon a downed giant redwood and when a tree trunk base is larger than our car, that is something that is truly incredible!!

Now up in Seattle for Christmas it is so great to be home with family.. We hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas and be on the look out for our Christmas Road Trip.. Part 2. We will be taking the 101 freeway down the Oregon coast and from there we will see where the road takes us!!

Merry Christmas from Kyle, Chloe and I here at s28!!!

Leather Craftsmen Sample Album...

It has finally arrived!! There is something about opening the box of a Leather Craftsmen Album that just says, "WOW!" We ordered our first studio sample album about a month ago and received it last week. We are so excited to now have it to show clients and help them understand what we mean when we say those simple words... Leather Craftsmen..!

When you say Leather Craftsmen it means, a custom, perfect, and immaculate way to display the photos of your wedding day. From the custom cover material to the embossing of the couples names, the thick flush mounted pages and the spine that allows each page to open flat, these albums are the "creme de la creme."

We can't wait to create more of them for all of our amazing clients and now with our sample we will be able to help them understand what we mean when we say, "Your Leather Craftsmen Album."

To put it simple... "These albums kick ass.!!"

Dancing... Babies.. and UP!

It was one of those weekends! Where every time I turned around there seemed to be a message that was being shouted at me over and over... "Life is an adventure, filled with moments big and small."

It started on Friday night, after a great dinner and some rowdy board games we had a dance party with two of our closest friends at their house. The spur of the moment, let loose, have fun dance and sing with all your heart kinda dance party! Saturday it was all about baby. A good friend had her shower in Venice and it was a day filled with laughter and celebrating a new little life coming into this world! To top it all off we watched the movie, UP, and let me just tell you I cried. no not the cute little tears that stream gently down your face, but the big soggy ones that make your nose run and your eyes puffy. The part that got me (without giving to much away) was when Mr. Fredrickson had reached his goal and while looking threw the "Adventure Book, Things I'm going to do," section, he saw a lifetime of shared memories filled with love.. and a note... "Thanks for the adventures together, now go make new ones!"

For me this weekend was about seeing and going after that adventure in life, from the small dance parties to celebrating a new baby! Life is a journey and this weekend reminded me to take the moments along the way and embrace them! With Thanksgiving right around the corner I feel happy, thankful and excited!

Cheers! Kyle & Allison..

A Little Lifestyle...

During our free time one thing Kyle and I love to do is shoot lifestyle photos of our friends. We love the fun and carefree aspect of just taking a afternoon, playing some tunes, and letting loose. Lifestyle photography is great because it allows us to take a different approach shooting and giving direction, and it takes a new kind of creativity. There's lots of laughter, the phrase "work it out" (has become a personal favorite of mine) and just plain fun! We have a little home studio and have been getting quite good use out of it!

It challenges us to evoke all types of emotion, and see the various ways to capture that emotion . Capturing that one frame that says it all.

So here are some out takes of a recent shoot! Never underestimate the power of a friend, a fan and a white seamless!

Cheers!

s28 + Pasadena Expo...

Sunday we headed up to Pasadena for our first wedding expo. We have spent the past few weeks getting everything ready. Printing, editing, gathering our supplies all in anticipation of our day today! One of our favorite stops when we were getting ready was My Sweet And Saucy Shop, where the Fabulous Melody had her amazing lollipop cupcakes waiting for us!

We had a great time at the expo and were lucky enough to meet with many different brides all unique and special with excitement in their voice and sparkle in their eyes when they told us about their upcoming Weddings! We are looking forward to getting to know some of the wonderful brides (and a few grooms) we met and be a part of their big day!!

Cheers!!

A Shortbread Aloha Gift...

It was a fun day, filled with laughter, talk of dogs, surf and meeting two new people we could call friends! They are an easy going couple that laughs freely and easily and Kyle and I instantly felt like we had met two kindred spirits. Vanessa and Joe were so much fun to shoot when we visited Hawaii last September.

Friday we were surprised to find they had sent us a little piece of aloha in the form of shortbread cookies covered in chocolate from the Hawaiian Cookie Company. So amazingly good, so thoughtful and so Vanessa and Joe.! It is with a warm heart and a big smile I write this post because that is what means the most to Kyle and I... genuine.. real people, real connections and real friends!

With that... Mahalo Vanessa and Joe, and A Hui Hou!! (until we meet again)

Little Mr. Will...

I am not going to lie I was a bit nervous, I flew home to Seattle to shoot a baby session by myself and I was surprised at the nerves tumbling around. I have become so used to shooting as a team, Kyle and I, that to be on my own was new and took a minute to adjust. I will admit when I arrived I was put completely at ease by the warm smiles of Brianne and Scott and the most adorable baby ever little Mr. Will..

Brianne and Scott met in junior high, we all went to school together and now these two adorable high school sweethearts are happily a married couple with a darling baby boy. Kids are a bit of a mystery to me, babysitting experience, nope, younger siblings, not so much, friends with kids, nada, I honestly don't know much about kids let alone babies. So I was more than excited when Brianne emailed me mentioning she wanted to do some family photos.

The day arrived and miracle of all miracles it was sunny in Seattle. I drove to Brianne's house and was greeted by her and Scott and met the man of the hour... Will! Will was a dream baby to shoot, in fact he was just a dream baby period. happy, giggly, cute, full of expressions and laughter, I was smitten with him. He was a little man in all sense of the words, he had action comics framed in his nursery, car mobiles, and a little truck tee to top it all off.

I had so much fun photographing the Prather Family. It's always great to catch up with old friends and meet the adorable little people they have brought into this world... I am so excited to introduce, Scott, Brianne and Will!!

Enjoy....

s28 & Facebook...

We went back and forth on the idea.. another cyber space community to be a part of. I thought to myself, first people emailed, then they Myspace'd, and now they Facebook.. I am somewhat astounded at the amount of cyber communications.. what about a phone call, the idea can seem so old school.

So the idea of a Facebook Page seemed to present itself as a precarious possibility wrapped up in a nicely purposed package. Precarious for a few reasons.. do we need another form of cyber communication? Is a fan page like creating a club? Do I get a cool membership card, a secret handshake, a password, whistle knock knock.. anything?! Nope, not so much..

However, after weighing the odds Kyle and I decided to go for it because the main purpose of reaching new friends and letting old friends know what Studio 28 is up to seemed to outweigh the precarious factors.. So here it is the Studio 28 Facebook Page.. and were working on the secret membership cards..

Keep an eye our for it..! Ha..

40 Years And Counting...

I know this doesn't happen very often, but today this is Kyle on the s28 blog for a very great reasons..

Last week my parents made a trip out from my hometown in Wisconsin to Huntington Beach for a visit. The first night they arrived they announced they wanted to hire Allison and I to shoot... not an engagement session (obviously), but an anniversary shoot!! In June, my parents will have been married 40 years and they wanted to do a couples shoot in celebration of this milestone. So last weekend we were lucky enough to get to capture two people in love after 40 years.

I think the best part of the shoot was how much fun we had. We laughed so hard we all came to tears when we told my mom, Shirley to pretend to wrap Norm, my dad in for a kiss, and she lassoed him in with her scarf and planted one on him. Wow.. A life lived together after 40 years of love, laughter and memories. It was such an amazing experience to be able to capture such a big moment in my parents lives.. and I love them for letting me capture some moments..

So here they are, my parents, my friends and my inspiration. Celebrating 40 years together next summer, Norm and Shirley!!

A Few Simple Shoots... Jami & Mark..

We wanted to try something new... Call it, "Poses and Interaction Class," hosted by Studio 28 Photo for s28 photographers. Kyle and I were the teachers as well as the students. The goal was to take away all the extras of a usual shoot and focus on the basics, us, our camera, and a couple in love. We chose a simple white seamless background because we wanted no distractions, and to be all about capturing the great moment between two people and nothing else.

The day arrived and Jami and Mark were willing to be our subjects for what we can call s28 class, and might I must say we had an amazing time. It is a completely different shoot when its just you telling the couple how to interact and that's it. It makes you think of more interesting and different poses, how to make them feel comfortable, and how to get great photos in a simple setting. We had a few challenges, the main one being lightening, seeing as we like to shoot with natural light as much as possible, so we worked our reflector like never before.

Overall we had a great time, learned a lot, laughed a lot and will definitely do this again. So here you have it... A few simple shots from s28 of Jami & Mark!

Inspiration... Inspired!

I have to come clean... I am a bit of a junkie.. there, I said it. I have a problem. I can sit and flip threw magazines and blogs ALL DAY LONG! I constantly have piles of magazines around the house that drive Kyle crazy, and no not because he has none himself but because I have stacks and stacks that I am reluctant to through away. Vogue February 2004 issue, yep got it, InStyle June 2006, check. Surfer, Shape, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Allure, Adventure, INC, Traveler, to name a few... I love magazines.

I can flip and re-flip constantly. What is the vein of my problem? I find various types of inspiration in all of them. I am drawn to images that make me look twice and then ask myself why do I love this image, and how can I incorporate it into what I do? It can be a fashion shoot from Vogue, an ad in Glamour, to the perfect Island shot from Tahiti in Surfer. I just find it all so inspiring! It transports me to that, "Wow I wish I was there," type of feeling.

That why I love photography... it allows me the ability to create those, "I wish I was there feelings," and my all time favorite... "Wow they look like they are so in love," types of images!!!

Here is a look at some of our current favorite inspirations. We have a ever growing pile but currently these are my favorites. They all make me look twice, look longer, and make me want to go out and be a better photographer..

Vanessa & Joe... Anytime...

We were standing at the corner in Waikiki waiting to start our shoot with Joe and Vanessa, when Kyle leans over and asks, "do you think they are excited?" As I was standing there thinking, "I hope so," in the distance I spotted a couple walking towards us hand in hand and instantly I was smitten with them.

Joe and Vanessa are an adorable couple, the subtle glances, the laughter, the kisses in between shots, that made for even better shots. The amount of fun they we had made them an absolute blast to shoot! Vanessa has an easy laugh and bright smile, while Joe is the laid-back, easy going type that when I said, "Joe pick her up and swing her," he not only did it but added a kiss and a lot of laughter. This instantly made me think how lucky am I to meet such amazing people and capture such fantastic moments.

It was so great to be back in Hawaii with the crystal blue ocean as the backdrop, my husband by my side doing what we love, and having an amazing couple to shoot. At that moment I felt truly blessed. Again we want to give a huge thank you to Tara of Pacific Wedding Guide for setting up this great shoot...

So it is with a warm heart, happy memories I am so proud to introduce to you, Vanessa and Joe....

"A Hui Hou..." (Until We Meet Again...)

The sun kissed the ocean as the breeze gently stirred and I was happy, content at peace. Our trip was amazing, we surfed, we snorkeled, we sat with the sand between our toes and the sun on our salty skin as we soaked up every ounce of Hawaii..

It was a great reminder in between all the emailing, the tweets and the business that is life, to take a minute and just be!! So cheers to frufru drinks, plumeria flowers, sandy toes and crystal blue water. Aloha can mean Hello, Goodbye and I Love You! So Hawaii, Hello and thank you for the amazing time, Goodbye and we hope to see you soon and I love you for the memories that you have given me...

"A Hui Hou!!!"

Aloha... Hello! & Aloha... I Love You!

Kyle and I are off to the island of Oahu for some R&R next week!  I went to college at HPU and along with some friends we are off to enjoy sometime in one of my favorite places.  I am super excited to show them all my old favorite college hangouts, favorite breaks and beauty of the island.

One of my favorite parts of Hawaii is the Aloha!  As many of you know it means, hello, goodbye and I love you.  Best of all it is the spirit that the people who live there embrace.  We were lucky enough to get in contact with Tara of Pacific Wedding Guide.
She has an amazing business and has been wonderful in helping us get in touch with some couples and set up some engagement shoots while we are in Hawaii...

We are so excited to say "Aaalllooooohaaa" to Hawaii and our new fabulous friend Tara.. We are excited to experience the Aloha of love between the couples we meet!

Be sure and check back to see the full posts of the shoots!  Can't wait to share them!

Aloha!

A Glance Back.. To Look Forward...

Yesterday we said goodbye to summer... well as much as you can say goodbye to summer when you live in Southern California. This summer was a busy one for Kyle, Chloe and I. We moved into a new place, worked on Studio 28.. a lot, did some traveling, and in-between it all managed to have some summer fun. BBQ's, great friends, lazy days and long nights, a surf in the morning a surf in the evening ahhhhhh summer..

We have set some big goals for the remainder of 2009 and the upcoming 2010.. we will definitely have our nose to the grindstones for the next few months to make things happen. Excited to see what the future holds but in the last few hours of summer we feel thankful for the great times, good friends and awesome memories!!

Cheers to more..!
